Business Sustainability Catalyst Breakfast:

Supply Chain Sustainability: Getting on Board

Sustainability strategy extends beyond your businesses operations, and savvy organizations have begun examining how their supply chain affects their overall environmental and social impacts. Supply chain sustainability requirements are quickly growing to become a key market-driven response to consumer demands for social and environmental responsibility and transparency. Large multinational corporations like Walmart use sustainability questionnaires to drive innovation, cost-savings, and engagement with their suppliers. What can small-to-medium sized businesses do to improve their environmental profile within their supply chains?

In this workshop, Amy Haddon and Matt Wood, Renewable Choice Energy, will introduce a variety of  concepts related to supply chain sustainability and provide tools for companies to use to affect change within  their own supply chain. Beth Jensen, Director of Corporate Responsibility, Outdoor Industry Association (OIA), will present information about the OIA's Sustainability Working Group (SWG) - a collaborative effort within the outdoor industry focused on supply chain sustainability.  Specifically, Ms. Jensen will speak about the SWG's Eco Index (an environmental assessment tool designed to provide companies throughout the supply chain with a way to benchmark and measure their environmental footprint and make informed sourcing and product life cycle decisions), chemical management in the supply chain, materials traceability from farm to finished product, and social responsibility and fair labor.

Event attendees will learn:

  • The opportunities and challenges presented by supply chain sustainability programs
  • Best practices in measurement and management of supply chain metrics
  • Methods for reporting and disclosing supply chain impacts
  • Ways to encourage participation and improve supplier response to initiatives
