Your Stake in a Responsible Economy: Sustainable Purchasing

Sustainable purchasing that integrates environmental, social and economic considerations in all purchasing decisions, is a powerful tool to lessen company`s footprint on the environment, support the local economy, and encourage diversity of providers. Many federal and local governmental agencies and universities practice sustainable purchasing, mostly driven by policy decisions. This is the case in Colorado, where 39 members of the Responsible Purchasing Network are governmental or educational institutions; however none are businesses.

What are the difficulties that businesses face when establishing sustainable purchasing practices? Are there any forthcoming regulations that could affect Colorado business purchasing practices? How do other businesses make it happen and see a value? Please join the conversation with our speakers:

Jim McIntyre, Purchasing Director for the City and County of Denver, will provide an overview of environmental and social aspects of sustainable purchasing decisions and how organizations can make it happen.  Discussion points will be how the procurement function can effect environmentally preferred purchasing objectives and pursue supplier diversity through bidding strategies, policies and education and outreach.

Mickki Langston, Executive Director, Mile High Business Alliance, will discuss the importance of local sourcing and provide an update on federal and local legislative initiatives that might affect Colorado businesses`procurement practices.

Gerri Walsh, Director Sustainability, Ball Corporation, will speak about how Ball is incorporating sustainability considerations in purchasing decisions within capital projects spending and supporting Minority and Women Owned Businesses.

Deanna Bratter, Responsible Livelihood Manager at WhiteWave Foods, will focus on upstream side of purchasing decision making, specifically, on tools leading up to business decisions and ways to assess sustainability impacts through
clearly defined boundaries.  She will also describe her company`s purchasing goals and a partnership with Conservation international on responsible ingredient sourcing.
